An Overview of Digital Radio Broadcasting
Digital radio broadcasting is effective technique in which sounds are processed and transferred in binary digits streams.Traditional FM/AM radio station broadcast their transmission in analog signals for their listeners. Radio receiver is not necessary to broadcast analog signals. Digital radio broadcasting provides slow demise analog transmission with clean and efficient sound quality. It converts analog signals to digital as there is rapid change in the transmission of AM/FM sound in global market.
Digital radio broadcasting is also called digital audio broadcasting. It is a new technology for sending and receiving transmission to radio stations. The name of this system indicates that signals are transmitted in digital form to enable high quality signals. People who use digital radio broadcasting find better presence and quality of sound. It does not face the problem of multipath that is often experienced in FM transmission. The system uses single frequency network where there is no need of moving from one area to other. Digital radio signals contains data at the side of audio and transfer images and text along with audio to increase the quality of listening.Digital radio broadcasting help to transmit picture of artist and title track along with audio data. This technology is increasing used in many countries like UK, Australia, Canada, Europe and USA etc.
Digital broadcasting Methodlogy:
There are two types of systems that are implemented in digital broadcasting system. These are audio digital encoding or compression system and modulation system. Compression and encoding system has significant importance as it is efficient for data compression to considerable level of transmission. This reduction improves the transfer rate of incoming signals and threshold of sound. It is ideal to implements on such channels that use only speech mode for transmission.
Modulation system is another key operation that uses COFDM (called coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexer) modulation. It works like spread spectrum that deliver the robustness to prevent interference and reaction from disrupting destination. It uses almost 1500 carriers of 1.5 MHz spectrum where carriers are placed closely to one another. Interference is mitigated by making signals orthogonal with each other. The audio data is spread on the carrier to consume a small space. This system can easily work with other digital radio broadcasting transmitters at the same frequency rate. It is easy to set up such a system in such a place where all transmitter work at the same frequency rate.
Digital radio broadcasting allocation:
In the UK, the allocation of spectrum is starting from 217 MHz to 230 MHz for the transmission of digital radio. While in other countries a spectrum of better quality is available in Band III form that consumes the spectrum allocation between 1452 and 1467 MHz.
Benefits:
- Digital broadcasting provides you following benefits:
- Higher sound quality
- Better reception of signals and sounds
- Possible to transmit title page or images
- Portable radio system
- Possible to implement at the same frequency rate radio station
- Offer multiple choices in programming for the entertainment of listens
