Protect Data

Data is the most valuable thing on the computer as people need first place precautions to save data from unexpected risks. Data is made up with the combination of bits and bytes and you need to put it on first priority when you apply protective strategies on it. Some sort of data is very confidential as firms apply different data protection techniques on it so that unauthorized user cannot access it. Exposure of credit card number, bank account information and social security number are the sensitive sort of data that has high level exposure of theft. Here, I would like to share some ways to protect data from unauthorized access and loss.

Back up Regularly:

The most important way for data protection is to take quick back up of it regularly. If you are using windows, you can use the window data backup utility to perform the process of back up. With the use of wizard mode, it is easy to create and restore back up. You can also configure the backup setting manually and there is need to set a schedule back up so that it can performed back up task automatically.  There are different back up programs that offer many options. It does not matter of what type of program you use, it is better to store a back up copy of this program in offsite. It saves your data in case of fire, natural disaster and tornado that can destroy your back up discs and tape.

Use share-level security

If you want to protect data from unauthorized access, it is important to set permissions on folders and files. If you are managing data in share network, you need to set share permissions so that user can access it in accordance to their rights and permissions. With the use of XP/windows 2000, you can perform it on the click of permission button on the tab of sharing in the properties of files and folders. However, you cannot apply these permissions on the local computer where data is stored. When you share computer with someone else, you need to share these permissions. These file level permissions are placed in the security tab of the properties sheet and it is more granular than common share level permission. In both situations, you can easily set permission on groups and accounts and allow various level of access from read only control.

Password-protect documents

Many applications like adobe reader and Microsoft allow users to set password on their important documents. You can set it easily by going to tools/options/ security tab. Some zipping software like WinZip can be used to encrypt and compress data.

Use EFS encryption

Server 2003, window 2000 and xp pro use encrypting file system to secure data. You can use encrypting folder or file option by clicking on advanced button existed in the general tab of the properties sheet. You must remind that you cannot use NTS compression and EFS encryption at the same time.

Disk encryption

There are many third part products that provide you the way to encrypt the whole disk. It locks down the contents of the hard drive that look transparent to user. In this way, data is encrypted when it is stored on hard drive and decrypted when it is loaded into media memory.

Public key infrastructure

Public key infrastructure is the way of handling private or public key pairs as these keys are issued by third party to implement security measure on data. You can easily protect data by the use public key encryption and other person will able to decrypt it if he or she holds the private key code.

Steganography

Steganography is the way to hide data into other data. For instance, you can easily hide a text into a message within mp3 music, text file and jpg graphic file. It uses encryption software to hide data and then decrypt it when data is reached at secure place. Steganography needs the exchange of secret key to perform this task successfully.

Secure wireless transmission

When you send data on wireless network, hackers can easily access it with the use of portable computer and wireless antenna. You need to store or send data on such wireless network that use encryption like Wi-Fi protected network access.

Rights management

Windows provide your RMS (right management service) to manage documents that you send to recipient as he can only read it but cannot modify or change and save it. These are some data protection techniques that help you to protect data in secure way.
